My ‘Drive‑Thru to Kitchen’ Challenge: 7 Days Without Starbucks

My ‘Drive‑Thru to Kitchen’ Challenge: 7 Days Without Starbucks

Let's do something slightly rebellious.

Let's take the drive-thru out of the equation for one week.

Not forever. Not as a personality change. Just as an experiment.

Because if you're like I was—daily Starbucks runs, sometimes multiple times a day—it's not that you love spending the time and money. It's that the habit is baked into your routine.

And habits don't change with guilt.

They change with a plan that's easy enough to actually follow.

The rules of the Drive-Thru to Kitchen Challenge

For the next 7 days:

  • Brew your coffee at home at least 5 out of 7 days
  • If you slip? You're still in the challenge.
  • Your goal is progress, not perfection.

What you need (keep it simple)

Choose ONE brewing method for the week:

  • Drip machine
  • French press
  • Pour-over
  • Single serve

Then grab:

  • Beans you like
  • Your favorite mug
  • Something that makes it feel like a treat (more on that below)

Day-by-day: what to expect

Day 1: "This feels slower."

Yep. New routines feel slower because your brain is paying attention.

Pro tip: Set up your coffee corner the night before.

Day 2: "I miss the little reward."

This is the real reason we drive-thru.

So replace it—on purpose.

Add ONE "treat" element at home:

  • Warm mug
  • Cinnamon on top
  • Vanilla in the cup
  • A 3-song playlist
  • 2 minutes on the porch

Day 3: "Wait… this is actually good."

This is usually when your taste wakes up.

Fresh beans + consistent method = instant upgrade.

Day 4: "I'm getting my time back."

No commute. No line. No extra stop.

That's where the peace starts.

Day 5: "I'm not thinking about coffee as much."

You stop chasing it.

You just… have it.

Day 6: Weekend mode

Weekends are the best time to build your ritual.

Try a slower method (French press or pour-over) and make it your thing.

Day 7: The check-in

Ask yourself:

  • What made brewing easier?
  • What made it feel satisfying?
  • What got in the way?

Then keep what worked.

The 3 most common obstacles (and easy fixes)

Obstacle 1: "My coffee tastes weak."

Fix: Use a little more coffee, not more time.

Starter ratio: 1 tablespoon per 6 ounces (adjust from there)

Obstacle 2: "It tastes bitter."

Fix: Go a bit coarser grind OR reduce brew time.

Obstacle 3: "Cleanup is annoying."

Fix: Choose the method with the cleanup you can tolerate.

(There is no moral value in choosing pour-over. Choose the method you'll actually do.)

My favorite way to make it feel like a coffeehouse at home

I'm going to say something controversial:

A coffeehouse isn't a coffeehouse because of the espresso machine.

It's a coffeehouse because of the experience.

So borrow the parts you love:

  • A better mug
  • A little foam (even a handheld frother)
  • Cozy lighting
  • Music
  • A small "coffee corner" that feels intentional

Your mini win this week

If you complete the challenge, you don't just save money.

You prove to yourself: "I can take care of me at home."

And that confidence spills into everything.

Want the easiest version of this?

I made a simple workbook that walks you through:

  • Setting up a coffee corner in 10 minutes
  • Picking the right method for your life
  • A 'treat at home' ritual menu
  • Quick recipes + a morning routine template

Then come back and tell me what day felt like the turning point.

Because I promise—there's always a moment when you realize:

"Oh. This is mine now."
